瑞典作家Stieg Larsson的《千禧三部曲》(The Millennium Trilogy):The Girl With the Dragon TattooThe Girl Who Played With FireThe Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest

Too bad that the author of this trilogy didn't have the chance to see the success of his works.

Joel,
Indeed. But I believe he knew it would be an extraordinary success. And the writing process itself would brought him much fulfillment.

hkstandard:

Yooo!!! this is a famous novel in Sweden,it's so Swedish ,from the culture perspective.

I only watched the movie. (but it was said to be quite faithful).

nitpicking
1) harriet is henrik's nephew, not 'grand' nephew? she was 16 already in 1966. --- that makes her 50 by the millenium?
2) Fermat's Last Theorem -- usually translated as 费马大定理(or 费马最后定理)。 A theorem is not the same as a "law" in mathmatics. The problem is, it was already solved some 15 years ago, by andrew wiles of Princeton (who got the fields' medal for this) -- though that doesn't stop someone from trying to find a simpler/smarter (elementary) proof. wiles' proof was a few hundred pages thick, while Fermat himself claimed he had a 'simple proof' -- some 150 years ago.

Sun Bin said...

correction:
1) Fermat's note was more than 350 years ago in 1637
2) Wiles was 1 year too old for Fields, but got some consolation prize (silver plate) from the IMU -- the body which decides the Fields.

TinTin:

Hello Sun Bin,
Wow it's been a while!
You are unchanged - still obsessed with details :)

(1)According to the book, Harriet is the daughter of Henrik's elder brother's son. And yes, she's already 50 by millenium. Yet age doesn't seem to be a problem - she will have an affair with Mikael in the sequel!

(2)I read Fermat's Last Theorem years ago and knew it's already solved by Wiles. Later I found a Taiwan translation of it and it's named "費碼最後定律".

A person like you won't be satisfied by the film only. Read the book la. You won't be disappointed.

Sun Bin said...

1) yeah, maybe i should have read the book. but the surprise element is gone once you saw it in one medium. (sort of an either or case). maybe i will read the book for part 2&3, i heard there are much less surprise elements in them and the movie version for 2/3 not as good -- i already have obtained the other 2 movies though. :)

the other reason i was reluctant to read the book was because they changed the name (original title "the man who hates women"?) and took out the island map. so i thought they might have messed up other stuff for marketing purpose as well.

2) in the movie i think Gottfried was the brother (not the nephew) and the pictures were posted side-by-side on the wall (indicating same generation). i read some of the comparisons in the web, the story of the book seems a lot more convincing (e.g. for unknown reason the movie changed the official reason for mikael's staying on the island). A lot of the details also skipped. They should have made it a short TV series, like Das Boot.

3)i had no regret about choosing for the movie though -- i love the pictures of the young harriet, and how the movie presented them.

The other reason I didn't think about reading the book was I heard the comparison with Da Vinci Code (which I really don't like), and even with Umberto Eco (which is ok but though over-rated IMHO, as I have no taste for the Middle Age).

Of course, now I know this one is much better than Da Vinci Code.

i think i saw the book about how wiles solved the problem years ago. the translation quality in taiwan is usually ok. they should not make such a basic mistake. Same for taiwan or mainland, or hk. i am quite surprised.

tintinbright said...

Sun Bin said...

@ tinitin

"田野調查" seems to be quite a common translation in China these days, i think.

I would prefer the english translation -- mainly because scandiavian languages and english belong to the same linguistic family.
for korean or japanese book i prefer the chinese translation because there are a lot of common words (and names in chinese characters).

Hello TinTin & Sun Bin,
First of all, I admit that I made a mistake - it should be 費馬最後定理. I was wrong. Have corrected it right away. Thank you for pointing it out.

TinTin, that's why I don't read Chinese translations in most cases. They usually sabotage a supposedly-pleasant reading experience!

Sun Bin, the movie did skip a LOT of details - that's why I recommend you reading the book. I don't think the change of the book title or the removal of the map does any harm to the novel. But yes, young Harriet surely makes the movie more attractive in one way:)

Sun Bin said...

ok, i plan to read the book as advised.

but i would watch the movies first -- mainly because the book is much richer in the details while the movie focuses on the twist/results (plus the movie is well reviewed). if i am going to do both i would be greatly disappointed at the movie (losing the twist) had i read the book first.

so far i finished TGWPWF the movie, decent and reasonably well done (not as good as TGWADT though), probably on par with inception and the like (i don't see Inception as high as many others in asia does though, IMO Memento is way better than Inception). there are holes in the movie such as a scene which is more incredulous (in terms of physics) than what we saw in Kill Bill.

---
then i searched the book to find the FLT reference. I have to say I am not happy to see how the element of mathematics was blended into the story. esp. when i saw "Wiles used "the world's most advanced computer program" in his proof". You can see these links to understand why.

So I finished the movie trilogy and begin with the book, quite a good start. But one warning for anyone planning to read it. AVOID the American version -- it has the stupidest tendency of "converting (instead of translating" the metric units. such as 0 Fehrenheit, 700 sq ft (though the latter is familiar to HK readers -- who should note the swedish area probably would not count windows sills and "club house/hallway entrance"). Before the "assume the reader are retards" market oriented translation the practice was to preserve the units and add a footnote for conversion.

p.s. I read the first book's obvious clues (from which i was able to guess the "mystery" right away, even by viewing the 'much shorter' movie) as the author's criticism of the "lack of critical reading" of the journalism industry, as mikael "regurtgitated" vanger's hypothesis without much questioning.
